Open or Closed Patella?
The difference between closed patella and open patella knee supports.
All knee supports cover the whole knee joint providing additional protection to the patella (knee-cap).
The primary difference between an open patella and closed patella knee support is the patella is left uncovered at the front of the knee.
Closed Patella knee supports are a continuous comfortable sleeve allowing movement of the knee joint while also providing firm overall support and compression over the kneecap.
Closed Patella knee supports offer great all round protection for the knee, and they also offer ever so slightly more support than Open Patella supports and are favoured by athletes in sports such as weightlifting.
Open patella knee supports have a reinforced patella stabiliser. This helps prevent abnormal tracking (unwanted movement) of the patella during activities ensuring correct alignment with the rest of the joint. It also helps to relieve pressure on the patella.
Open patella knee supports can be better for longer periods of exercise as well as providing the extra benefits of the patella support.
Remember to always check with a trained professional to ensure the correct support for your needs.
